Perth florist, Sarah McMillan of Beautiful Bunches agrees that various meanings can be ascribed to various flowers, there isn’t one master list.”Notwithstanding the different meanings, people have been using flowers to send messages since ancient times.”
Turkey is believed to be the where the language of flowers originated, but ‘flower language’ was present in many ancient and modern cultures across the globe.As early as 2 500 BC, from the Ancient Turks and Ancient Egyptians, South America’s Aztec civilzation to the ancient Chinese and early Europeans, flowers have been a part of culture across the corners of the world.
Significant religious meanings were ascribed to different flowers in Ancient Egypt. For example the lotus flower or water lily was believed to be sacred to Isis, Egypt’s most revered goddess.For the ancient Chinese, flowers and herbs were very important particularly in religion and medicine.They believed the tiger lily and orchid were symbols of fertility whilst the peony, their most revered flower, stood for wealth and social position.
The art of sending messages via a flower arrangement is known as floriography. While it’s unlikely that a customer today will contact a florist in Perth to send a secret coded message in a bunch of flowers, it was common practice in historical times.
One type of floral art has endured from the 15th century through to today – the art of making aromatic posies which convey a secret message. These posies are known as tussie-mussies and were made by gathering together fragrant herbs and flowers in tightly bound, circular arrangement.
The old saying to ‘avoid something like the plague’ may have come from 17th Century Britain, when people believed that ‘foul air’ caused the plague and so they held tussie mussies close to their noses to ward it off.They became extremely popular during the Victorian era when gentlemen suitors sent coded messages contained in these these aromatic bunches or word posies. The nosegays of ladies in Edwardian times had a special ring attached, enabling them to hold the tussie-mussies while they danced. In those days, single pink flowers meant ‘perfection’ whilst a variegated pink meant ‘rejection’.
Although old-fashioned, tussie mussies still prevail in modern times.Judges at the Old Bailey in London carry a tussie mussie into court several times as year as was the practice in Elizabethan times, and Queen Elizabeth was given one at her Coronation.
Over the years, the exact meanings of the various flowers has changed as interpretations change, so the experts can’t give one definitive meaning for each flower. Throughout history, lots of floral dictionaries were published with symbolic meanings for flowers taken from classical mythology, religious symbolism, ancient lore and the whim of the individual writer.
While the experts don’t agree, there is certainly acceptance that one can say it with flowers. Perth florist, Sarah McMillan from Beautiful Bunches says that they can always create a floral arrangement knowing which flowers are best to convey a particular message. Most popular ones have kept their symbolic meanings over the years and include : white lilies as a symbol of purity; hydrangeas symbolizing devotion, tulips expressing undying love, daisies for romance and innocence.
