Winter Solstice Has Long Been Important To Many Cultures
The winter solstice represents the date that the earth is tilted at its furthest northern position away from the sun which is measured at 23 degrees 26′. This event is more obvious to those who live in the northern hemisphere and its effects are more prominent in the higher altitudes than those who live at sea level.
The event has very specifics physical effects on the earth, but it has also been the subject of many ceremonies and traditions among various religious cultures over the years. The fact that the sun is at its lowest annual position in the sky and is rising once again with the hope of a new year and a new season of life coming.
In the great country of Scotland, this is considered a special time of the year as this is the New Years Eve in this country and dates back to the sixteenth century in the fact that this has a rich tradition that is symbolized every year with the giving of gifts at the Yule time of the year.
In the Christian faith, this is a time of celebration in the fact that this represents the beginning of lent. This rising of the sun is supposed to represent the rebirth of the sun and in the upcoming year bring a new sense of rebirth and hope. The Jewish faith marks this as an important day in their faith as well.
Wicca followers follow this as being a special time in their faith as well. This actually is one of the eight important solar days of the year. For this fact many followers see this as the ideal time to celebrate the rebirth of the sun and with it a new sense of life and hope.
The Neolithic times saw a lot of special significance to observers of the solar pattern resetting. The event was believed to control the mating cycles of animals and the sowing and success of crops. Several cultures even built sites to commemorate the Solar cycle such as Stonehenge.
The occasion of the winter solstice will be an important time in a persons life. Those that are not used to the facts that are surrounding this will many times will allow a person to learn a few new things that they never knew before. This is an event that now that you know a little behind it, you will be able to enjoy it a little more.
